Annual Well-Woman Exams

Annual Well-Woman Exams

Well-woman visits are an essential part of preventive healthcare at every stage of life. These appointments help you stay informed, detect issues early, and build a trusting relationship with your OB-GYN.

When should you start?
Your first visit is typically recommended between ages 13–15, even if you’re not sexually active. Early visits often focus on education and building comfort with your provider.

What to expect during your visit:
Depending on your age, health history, and sexual activity, your visit may include:

  • General health screening – Height, weight, and blood pressure check
  • Menstrual health discussion – Especially if your periods are irregular, painful, or heavy
  • HPV vaccination – Recommended for those under 18
  • Sexual health counseling – Including STD testing and birth control options
  • Pelvic exam – To check for abnormalities in the uterus or ovaries (typically starting in early 20s
  • Pap smear – To screen for cervical cancer, starting at age 21
  • Breast exam – Routine clinical exams and referrals for mammograms as needed
  • Referrals – For mammograms, bone density scans, or specialized testing as you age

At Alamo Women’s OBGYN, we offer a wide range of birth control options and aim to provide a comfortable, judgment-free environment where your health questions are always welcome.

ABNORMAL PAP RESULTS

Annual Well-Woman Exams

Minimally invasive robotic surgery in San Antonio, Texas. OBGYN

If your Pap smear comes back abnormal, don’t panic—this is common and often not a sign of cancer. Here’s what the different results may mean:

  • Unsatisfactory:
The sample didn’t have enough cells to be properly evaluated. We’ll let you know when it needs to be repeated.
  • Benign Changes:
Your results are basically normal, but there may be inflammation due to an infection. A pelvic exam may be needed to identify and treat the cause. Ask when your next Pap test should be scheduled.
  • ASCUS (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance):
Some cells look unusual, but it's unclear why. This can often be linked to HPV.

    • If you're healthy, we may recommend an HPV test, repeat Pap test in a year, or a colposcopy (a closer look at the cervix).

    • If the follow-up test remains abnormal, a colposcopy may be necessary.

Next steps and treatment will depend on the cause of the abnormal result. Our team will guide you through every step to ensure proper follow-up and care.

Robotic-Assisted Hysterectomy (da Vinci® Surgery)

Robotic surgery in San Antonio, Texas, OBGYN

If you have a benign (non-cancerous) condition that affects your health or quality of life, your provider may recommend a hysterectomy—surgical removal of the uterus.

This procedure can be done through:

  • Open surgery – One large abdominal incision
  • Minimally invasive surgery – Small incisions using traditional laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System

Why Choose da Vinci® Surgery?

The da Vinci® System is a robotic-assisted surgical device that your surgeon fully controls at all times. It offers:

  • 3D high-definition vision for enhanced visibility
  • Wristed instruments that bend and rotate beyond the range of the human hand
  • Greater precision and control, allowing for less tissue damage, less pain, and potentially faster recovery

At Alamo Women’s OBGYN, we use advanced technology to provide the safest and most effective care possible.

ROBOTIC ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPY

How it works:
A surgical robot helps position and manipulate instruments through small incisions, allowing your surgeon to perform complex procedures with greater accuracy.

Benefits of robotic-assisted laparoscopy:

  • Smaller incisions and minimal scarring

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Faster recovery and return to normal activities
