ANNUAL WELL WOMAN EXAMS

ANNUAL WELL WOMAN EXAMS

OBGYN and Surgical Services in San Antonio, Texas

What happens during a well-woman visit? It can depend on a few factors, such as your age, health history and sexual activity.

It’s a good idea to have your first well-woman visit around age 13 to 15. You may just talk with your doctor and undergo a regular physical exam which your doctor or nurse will check your height, weight and blood pressure.

You might talk about your period, especially if you’re worried about it being heavy, painful, or irregular. If you’re under 18, you may be consulted on recieving shots, like the HPV Vaccine.

If you’re sexually active you may talk about Birth Control and STD testing.

Once you are in your early 20’s, you’ll start needing regular Pelvic exams, Pap Smears, and breast examinations. As we get older, and our health changes,  well-woman visits will include other tests and referrals for more detailed exams such as mammograms and bone density tests.

One thing we strive for at Alamo Women’s OBGYN is building a strong, honest relationship with our patients.

Here is a summary of what exams and tests you may be referred to during your visit.

Breast exam

Pelvic exam – to check for uterine or ovarian abnormalities and screen for cervical cancer. Depending on age, a mammogram or bone density scan may be ordered.

Depending on age, a Pap smear and possibly a test for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) may be ordered.

We offer a wide range of birth control options to suit your lifestyle and preference

ABNORMAL PAP RESULTS

ANNUAL WELL WOMAN EXAMS

Minimally invasive robotic surgery in San Antonio, Texas. OBGYN

  •  Unsatisfactory – For some reason the sample of cells was not an adequate sample and could not be read by the lab technician. The team at Alamo Women's OBGYN will monitor your results and let you know when the test needs to be repeated.
  • Benign changes – This means that your Pap test was basically normal. However, you may have an infection that is causing inflammation of the cervical cells. You may need a pelvic exam to check for the cause of the infection and prescribe treatment if needed. Ask when you should have your next Pap test.
  • ASCUS – (which is short for “Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance”) This simply means there are some funny looking cells on the test and more tests may be done to figure out if HPV (human papillomavirus) is the reason for the changes.

If you are healthy and your Pap shows ASCUS, we may recommend an HPV test, a repeat Pap in a year or colpscopy. You will need to have your Pap test repeated in one year. If the test (at the one year mark) is still abnormal you may need a colposcopy.

The type of treatment you have will depend on what caused the abnormal test results.

ROBOTIC ASSISTED HYSTERECTOMY

Robotic surgery in San Antonio, Texas, OBGYN

If you have a benign (non-cancerous) condition that affects your health and quality of life, you may be referred to surgical intervention via Hysterectomy.  It can be done with open surgery through one large incision into the upper cervical region. It can also be done with minimally invasive surgery through a few small incisions using traditional laparoscopy or da Vinci Surgery.

Why da Vinci Surgery?

The da Vinci System is a robotic-assisted surgical device that your surgeon is 100% in control of at all times. The da Vinci System gives surgeons:

  • 3D HD view inside your body
  • Wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand
  • Enhanced vision, precision and control

ROBOTIC ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPY

Minimally invasive female surgery in San Antonio, Texas, OBGYN

A surgical robot is a computer-controlled device that can be programmed to aid the positioning and manipulation of surgical instruments. Surgical robotics is typically used in laparoscopy rather than open surgical approaches. The goal of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is to help surgeons improve patient care. Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery has all of the advantages of minimally invasive surgery including less postoperative pain, smaller incisions, shorter hospital stay, shorter recovery time, and faster return to work and other daily activities.
